About this work
Looking down from a height, a wide boulevard curves past a corner building crowned with a green-patinated dome and turret, its ground floor occupied by an outdoor café crowded with red chairs and striped umbrellas. Trees and shrubs fill the lower foreground, while the road sweeps toward a bridge crossing the pale, hazy river in the distance.
Ochre and grey-brown masonry anchors the composition, set off by the vivid red of the café furniture and patches of green foliage. Bright, even daylight picks out rooftops and the metal dome, and quick, broken brushstrokes suggest the bustle of traffic and café life below with a lively, animated energy.
